Same-day water heater replacement is usually possible when the new heater is a like-for-like swap: same fuel, a similar size, the same spot, with venting, gas and water lines that only need reconnecting. What pushes a replacement past one day is a change in size or fuel, a tankless conversion, a vent or gas line that has to be reworked, or a model that has to be ordered.
What Has to Line Up for a Same-Day Swap
Getting hot water back on the day you call comes down to four things.
- A unit that is available today. Standard 40 and 50 gallon gas and electric tanks are the easiest to get on short notice. Unusual sizes, short or "lowboy" tanks for tight spaces, and power-vent models are harder.
- The same fuel and a similar size. Swapping a gas tank for a gas tank, or electric for electric, reuses the connections that are already there. Moving between fuels, or jumping to a much larger tank, means new gas, electrical or venting work.
- Usable venting. A gas tank has to vent its exhaust safely. If the existing flue and chimney connection are sound, the new heater connects to them. If they are rusted, undersized or not to current code, that work comes first.
- A way in and out. The old tank has to come out and the new one has to go in. Most basements and closets are fine. Very narrow stairs or a heater boxed in behind finished walls take more time.
When all four line up, a straight replacement is usually a two to three hour job on site.
Jobs That Usually Fit in One Day
These are the replacements most likely to be finished on the first visit:
- A failed 40 or 50 gallon gas tank replaced with the same type, venting into a sound flue.
- A failed electric tank replaced with an electric tank on the same circuit.
- A leaking tank in a garage or utility closet in newer homes around Middletown, Bear and Glasgow, where access is easy and the connections are recent.
Every replacement we do includes an expansion tank, and the job ends with the new heater filled, brought up to temperature and checked at a tap. The old unit leaves with us.
What Can Push It to a Second Day
These are the common reasons a replacement takes longer than one visit:
- Tankless conversions. Going from a tank to tankless is a bigger project, with new venting, often a larger gas line, and a wall-mounted unit sized for winter water temperatures. Our tankless installs take most of a day once the parts are on site. See tank to tankless conversion for what changes.
- Old chimney venting. Older Wilmington rowhomes often have original gas heaters venting into aging masonry chimneys. If the flue or liner is in bad shape, it has to be put right before a new gas heater can safely run.
- A size or fuel change. A bigger tank may need a different vent size, a new gas connection, or a new electrical circuit for an electric unit.
- Missing safety parts. A relief valve drain line that ends in the wrong place, no drip pan where one is required, or a shutoff valve that no longer holds all get fixed as part of the job.
- A model that has to be ordered. If your space only fits a specific size or style, the unit may not be available the same day.
None of these mean you go without information. We tell you on the first visit what is causing the delay and what it means for the timeline, before anything is disconnected.

Tank Leaking? What to Do While You Wait
A leaking tank is the most common reason people need a same-day replacement. A.O. Smith is direct about it: "if the tank itself is leaking, the entire water heater usually needs to be replaced." Water from a fitting or a valve can sometimes be repaired. Water from the tank body cannot.
While you wait for the plumber:
1. Close the cold water shutoff on the pipe above the tank. That stops the tank refilling and limits the water on the floor. 2. Turn the heater off. On a gas heater, set the control dial to "off." On an electric heater, switch off its breaker at the panel. 3. Move anything you want to keep dry away from the base of the tank, and put towels or a bucket where the water is going.
If you smell gas at any point, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Our guide on what to do when your water heater leaks covers the steps in more detail.

What a Same-Day Replacement Costs
Speed does not change the price of the heater. Our published installed prices are $2,198 for a 50-gallon electric tank and $2,498 for a 40-gallon gas tank, each including the expansion tank. Valves are extra and priced on site, and vent repairs can add to a gas job if the existing vent is not usable. Additional fees apply for after-hours and weekend service.
You see the flat price and approve it before any work starts. For a full breakdown of what moves the number, see our Wilmington water heater installation cost guide and the gas water heater replacement cost guide.
How to Speed It Up When You Call
A few details on the first call help us bring the right heater and plan the job:
- The rating plate. A photo of the label on the side of the tank gives us the size, fuel type and age.
- Where the heater is. Basement, closet, garage or attic, and whether the stairs or doorway are narrow.
- What is happening. Leaking from the tank, no hot water, or not enough hot water. If the tank is not leaking, it may be a repair rather than a replacement. Our same-day water heater repair guide explains what can usually be fixed on the first visit.
- Any change you want. If you want a bigger tank or are thinking about tankless, say so up front, because it changes what we bring.
Common Questions About Same-Day Replacement
Can a water heater be replaced in one day?
Yes, in most like-for-like cases. A standard tank swap takes two to three hours on site. Tankless conversions and jobs that need vent or gas work take longer.
Is it cheaper to wait for a scheduled replacement?
The heater and installation price is the same. The difference is after-hours and weekend service, which carries additional fees. If your old heater still works, replacing it on a weekday before it fails is the cheapest option.
Should I replace it before winter?
If your tank is past ten years old, yes. Incoming water gets colder in the Delaware winter, the heater works harder, and older tanks often fail in January. Our signs you need a water heater replacement guide helps you judge yours.
Do you serve outside Wilmington?
Yes. We cover New Castle County, Chester County, PA and Cecil County, MD.
